Richard Glass

Richard Glass was born in Plymouth in 1978. He studied Fine Art at Southampton Institute where he played around with projects involving light and transparency, using salt, fat and sugars for casting. This experimental work led him to an interest in glass… "As well as an apt last name…" Richard relished the idea of learning a skill, feeling that craftsmanship validated his work as an artist.

He was awarded an HND in Ceramics and Glass from Plymouth College of Art and Design, and stayed on to achieve a BA in Applied Art in 2001. "Apprentice glassmakers are given a pot of treacle and a stick to practice gathering with". So it was that glass began for Richard Glass… and in 2003 he gained a Masters degree.

Richard set up his own studio, 'Fluid Glass', and moved into Flameworks Creative Arts Facility in Devonport in December 2004, establishing a cold glass workshop there. In December 2005 Richard moved his studio to Teign Valley Glass at Bovey Tracey, where he is developing his own line of high quality decorative and sculptural glass.

Richard says that his designs "feel a little retro but have a contemporary twist". He hopes that "the last pieces of glass I ever make will be close to my very first efforts… only by then they will be informed by a lifetime's work of refinement."
