THE COUNTING HOUSE SERIES
The counting house is a body of work, which reflects through symbolism and
metaphor the second verse of the nursery rhyme 'sing a song of sixpence' and
an autobiography of a survivor of Auschwitz.
I used the dark mythology of blackbirds or any member of the crow family
to visualise the brutality of any ideology or counting house where people
became no longer human but merely numbers. However these images are not
specifically Nazi. Counting houses did not begin with Nazi Germany and have
proliferated in the post world war. Pol Pot, Sadam and innumerable dictatorships
in South America demonstrate only too clearly that counting houses are still very much with us.
